Powerboating Courses

If you’re a novice powerboater or seeking to boost your proficiency in docking and navigating in tight spaces, this course is tailored to suit your needs. The Boat Control On-Water Training Course Modules are specifically crafted to educate recreational boaters on boat handling techniques. Led by an NSBC Certified Instructor, who additionally possesses a Coast Guard Approved Captain’s License, the course will cover various aspects, starting from safety gear and pre-launch procedures, all the way to docking and refueling in close quarters. Each maneuver will be practiced repeatedly, progressing from idle speed to displacement mode, and ultimately reaching planing mode.

In this course students will learn and apply the following skills:
Centering the Wheel
Shifting Gears and Throttle Control
Standard and Urgency Stops
Ferrying and Weathervane
Securing the boat

In this course students will learn and apply the following skills:
Docking and Departing from dock
180-degree Turn-Around
Using SCAN for proper lookout

In this course students will learn and apply the following skills:
Balancing the boat load (Boat Trim)
Finding displacement mode
Crossing Waves
Emergency Stops

In this course students will learn and apply the following skills:
Man Overboard Drills
Avoidance Turns
Crossing wakes and waves
Stopping in plaining mode

One on One Boat Control Course

Experience the comprehensive powerboat training program on the scenic waters of San Diego, ensuring you acquire the necessary skills to navigate with confidence and safety. Qualified Boater’s One on One Boat Control course, approved by NASBLA, caters to both beginners and those seeking to enhance their boating proficiency. Learn vital close-quarter maneuvers, such as steering controls, gear shifting, controlled stopping, basic handling techniques, safe docking and departure, and managing wind and currents. Gain invaluable knowledge through hands-on powerboat handling under the guidance of a highly experienced USCG Licensed Captain. Our course blends study, observation, and practical experience for a truly immersive learning journey.

This course is 12 hours long. Can be taught during weekdays or weekends. We work with your schedule. We can provide a boat or we can train on your boat.

Course Schedule

Each of the four course modules is approximately 3 hours long, but time length may vary depending on the age and boating experience of the student.

Vessel

We offer over 20 different vessels to choose from with the option to go out of 4 different marinas in Southern California.

Eligibility

Prior to taking the course, students are required to complete a NASBLA-approved online boating safety course and bring their California Boater Card to class.
